Sally (now Holly)

Last March, saddened at the loss of our dear ChellaBella, A friend took me to the Ukiah Shelter in hopes that I would find a dog to love and heal my heartbreak. We made a tour through the shelter and, while there were several candidates to provide heartbreak remedy, Sally jumped right in with face kisses and wiggles. ChellaBella had been a rescue dog and we were committed to find another dog who needed a new home. I called my husband on my cell and announced, "I am in love!" He responded, "that's nice, I love you too!" Funny, I had to tell him it was a 18 month old, female Rottweiler named "Sally that had claimed my heart."

I brought Sally home to the coast that afternoon...yes she did get car sick crossing Highway 20...and she has been at home ever since. She immediately adapted to long walks on the Mendocino Headlands, chasing wildlife, and getting accustomed to her new name, Holly-Go-Lightly. In her first weeks she pranced through tall grass, hunted gophers and made friends with the "regulars" who provide puppy socialization.

Holly is a very special dog and we are thankful to have her as our own. She goes to work with "Daddy" every day and has become the office mascot. She watches all of the activity outside of our home, from her perch on the deck, and alerts us whenever a leaf moves or another dog marches by. She has learned to talk and is quite expressive. Most of all, she has filled our lives with joy and laughter.

Rots, like pits, have a difficult time finding homes. If our experience with Holly provides any assurance for those considering adopting one of these dogs, we can assure you that these dogs are loving, happy and the best friends one could ever ask for. Holly, as you can see from her photos, is a priceless member of our family!

Max (now Billy Bob)

Hi Mariah,

It's been a year since we adopted the little fox terrier-jack russell mix who you called Max. We call him Billybob, and he has settled into home here on the farm like he was born to it.

He loves running around the giant yard, playing with his girlfriend Oui-Oui, barking at squirrels, pidgeons and all kinds of other things, eating horse manure, and just generally being a dog.

Thank you for maintaining the pawstoadopt website and thus bringing Billybob into our lives.

Deb

Violet

Hi Mariah
Here are some current pictures of Violet, who I think stayed in the shelter for a record 16 months? She obviously received good care and love there because she had no trouble adjusting to her new life.....not that anyone would. I am a horse trainer, so she spends most of her time on a 200 acre ranch as the official greeter of people, entertainer of dogs, babysitter of children, and wild game warden (ess?). After long days she retires to her own bedroom in her own queen sized bed----where we can often hear her snoring from the next room. She usually sneaks into our bed (under the covers of course) at around 5 am.

I've never seen a dog who loves everything and everyone so much! She has reversed the way countless people perceive pit bulls---thank god!! Last weekend my husband was volunteering at a local school building a jungle gym. A local mom came in and was very concerned about Violet being loose around her kids. Violet proceeded to play tether ball with the children for 3 hours!

Lola

Hi Mariah!
Here are some pictures of Lola in her new home! Lola is loving her new home especially her big doggie bed and well.. everyones beds! Haha. After being in the shelter for 5 months she sure is adapting quick and is already very very comfortable! She loves to roll around in the ivy in the backyard and on walks she'll roll around in almost anything! She's so much fun and so sweet! Her tail is always wagging at home and shes always so happy to see you! Shes got a few favorite toys that she loves to play with and even stashes them up in the ivy in a little pile some times. She fits in very well and looooves all the attention. She's very, very much loved and I am so happy I got to adopt her from the shelter! Lola can't thank you enough for having the Paws To Adopt website!! We check it all the time to see if her friends got adopted! We will keep in touch!! Lola says "Bark Bark!!" with a big ol' smile! :)

Talk to you soon!!
Kelsi

Odie and Tink

[Here are some photos from a very dedicated volunteer who adopted not just one dog from the Ukiah shelter, but adopted TWO dogs from the Ukiah shelter! She might say the Ukiah shelter has the best dogs in the world?! And she is sure in love with her dogs... Even when they do something they shouldn't, she STILL thinks they are JUST ADORABLE!]

Here's some shots of mr. odie, in different activities: being a shlub, showing off his AKC Canine Good Citizen bandana, hanging with another Mendocino shelter rescue dog, Sammie (remember him?), and flying off the pause table during an agility run.

Here are some photos of Tink the Terrier-ist. thought you might enjoy them. he jumped up on the dining table to retrieve a new and favorite toy, and walked right over my computer, somehow closing a program or two. ISN'T THAT ADORABLE.

Ella

Hello,

I'm attaching a picture of Ella and a picture of why she doesn't have a crate anymore.. She loves attention and is very spoiled !!

Riley

Hi Mariah,

Just thought I would send you a couple of photos of Riley. He is still learning and working on his tricks. He now rolls over and back with a command and working on hand signals for this. He can sit up when he is not excited, he does a very good job of sitting up. But look out if you ever ask him to shake, as he will give you a “hay maker” or a “sucker punch”, so you have to beware.

He has developed one sort of a bad habit, he gives “puppy hugs”. Again when he is not excited, they are very gentle and he kisses your nose. But when he is excited, beware, that he will hit your nose with his nose, and sometimes hard enough to bring tears to your eyes. He does not do it to be mean, but, overly excited.

Anyway we hope you enjoy the pictures.

Have a good day,

Riley, Debbie and Roy

P.S.

I am not very spoiled, I am loved……..

Angel (now Miss Sixty)

Miss Sixty (formerly Angel)

Hi, my name is Miss Sixty and I love my new home! It is so much fun! Everyday Ryan takes me on long walks or we go to the dog park so I can play! All of the humans I meet ask about my name and Ryan tells them how I picked it on the ride home from the shelter… Ryan tried all the words he could think of and when he said, “Sixty,” I decided that was the name I wanted!

I am doing much better now that Dr. Forgy has helped me get rid of those bad worms that were living in my heart. She said that they were growing and having babies! Eww. I had to have shots and all kinds of medicine and then I couldn’t run or play for almost six weeks! It was really tough. Please tell everyone to get tested and make sure that they take their monthly treat…

Thank you so much for helping find my forever home!

-Miss Sixty

P.S. Here are some pictures of me; hope you like them…

P.P.S. Ryan says THANK YOU too!

Tootsie

Hi Mariah, Tootsie just had her 4th Birthday April 21st!! I sent a couple of cute pics for you!! Hope all is well!! Jimmy & Carole

Patience (now Kaia)

Hi Friends at PAWS TO ADOPT!

Kaia, A.K.A. Patience, is doing so well and so happy in her new home! She fit right in and loves her toys and bed and new family! We love her SO MUCH! She was on NBC Bay Area Monday morning.

We needed her Kaia, I'm not sure why, but we liked the name. Kind of like Ukiah, without the "U" and "H" -- spelled differently but sounds the same. I looked it up and it means "Diamond In The Sky". It is African which is fitting since Rhodesian Ridgebacks were bred in Africa to hunt lions. AND she has a little white star on her chest.

She is so good and already knows "Sit" and "Stay". She is such a lover too. She likes to play a bit then cuddle and nap.
We are so lucky to have found her! THANK YOU!

Boo and Panther

I just wanted to thank you for the time and dedication you put into this website, because of your site we now have adpoted two dogs from the Ukiah Shelter:

We first got Boo, which was my boyfriends decision, who was very shy and timid, and still is, but has finally came out of her shell quite a bit...he best friend is our cat, we constantly find them snuggling together on the couch...

Then we got Panther, because of my weakness for the breed...what a looker! I couldn't believe this goregous dog was at the shelter. Not only that but a total loverboy! He has NO aggression towards any animals, him and the cat play but he is very gentle. He's a big sissy.

He needs a little work on not jumping when people greet him when he's off his leash, because I don't think he realizes his size but other than that he's an amazing dog, and I couldn't ask for a better companion.

Here are some pictures from the time we got them until now:

Ceasar (now Jack)

Mariah,

My partner and I adopted Ceasar (now known as Jack) last week.
I have a personal site where I post my photo's and I've posted the pictures you took of Jack there. I've credited you for the photos but if you would like me to remove them please let me know.

Thank you very much for your wonderful photos and the write-up you did on Jack. Your site is what prompted us to make the drive up from Windsor to see him and we couldn't be happier. He's very well loved.

Thanks,
Angie

Katie

Hi Mariah, Here's a picture of Katie enjoying life! I'm so happy that we were able to save her. Many thanks to Sage for letting it happen.

Patches

Hi Mariah --

I just wanted to write to give you an update on Patches. We adopted him in October of 2006 after seeing him on your website. He has had a happy 2+ years living with us in San Francisco. He still loves chasing frisbees and gets to do that every day at the park around the corner. He's also come with us to Tahoe for vacations and loves playing in the Lake. He made an unanticipated beeline for it the first time we took him there. Dove right in even though it was November!

Anyway, your site is great and we wanted you to know that Patches is doing well. We love him and are so happy we found him in Ukiah! I've attached a few pics.

Thanks for all your good work,

Dina Goldman

Serena

She immediately made herself at home on this bed and collects all the toys in the house there. (Notice the pee stain) These aren't the best pictures, but she is really doing well and gets along well with my other dog. I think she will be a real ball of fire when she fully comes out of her shell!

Apple Blossom (now Juno)

Hello,

We adopted Apple Blossom (now known as Juno) on July 3rd. I just wanted to give you an update since it's been a little over a month.

Juno is doing fantastic. She will be attending formal obedience classes in September, but is doing great with obedience at home. She knows sit, stay, come, shake, lay, and drop (when playing fetch in the backyard). She gets along great with our toddler and cat. She learned right away to stay off the furniture and will not even try (when we're home, anyway) to climb onto the couch or beds. She loves her dog bed, which is right next to my side of the bed.

When we took her into the vet for her checkup and last set of shots, the vet said he's sure she has Great Dane in her. She weighed 44 lbs at 6 months old. I believe it.

Juno loves to play fetch with the tennis ball outside in the backyard. She still has a few accidents in the house every couple of days, though I'm sure this is no fault of her own -- us humans are surely to blame for not getting her out in time!

In short, she is the best dog. We love her so much and we're so glad that we found her and she found us. We couldn't ask for a better dog to bring into our home. We're all looking forward to Juno spending the rest of her life in our happy home.

I truly believe that shelter dogs express gratitude and thankfulness. I'm absolutely positive that Juno is grateful to be part of our family and is very thankful that we adopted her. I know that we all feel that way about her.

I have attached some pictures of Juno.

Thank you so much for all your hard work at the shelter,
Heather Chrisp

Comet (now Debbie)

I wanted to say comet aka Debbie is a doll. We are very happy to have her as a member of our family and wanted to THANK YOU AGAIN.

Walt (now Willie)

Walt is doing great. We are calling him Willie. He is very happy and a great friend to dogs and people everywhere he goes. If you see others like him in Ukiah (he was a street dog there), let us know - we are curious about his lineage! We love him so much - thanks!!

Scotty

Hey there y'all! This is Sarah White, my kids and I came in last week and adopted
Scotty. We just wanted to let you know that he is doing very well, loves our place and everyone is so amazed at how gentle he is. We had a birthday party with 15 kids a couple of days ago and he was a perfect gentleman the whole time. We are so glad to have found Scotty. Thank you. I have attached a couple pictures of him playing in our yard.
Thanks again,
Sarah White

Robbie (now Cash)

WOW...can you believe it has been a little over a year since I adopted Cash (aka Robbie). Time flies when you are having fun. You would recognize Cash if you saw him now, he has changed so much. He got over his fear of men and is now not growling at them when they come into the house. He is doing great!!! I couldn't be happier. He has his "moments", but all dogs do. He loves to go for his daily walk & his car rides still. He LOVES going to grandma & grandpa's house to run and jump over the fences and play with their dog Duke. He is definitely a joy to have & I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. I check out your site all the time, just to see what new dogs you get it. You have had a few I thought about driving up and adopting, but I think Cash is a one dog kind of dog....don't get me wrong, he loves playing with my friends dogs, but when it comes to me, he gets jealous with other dogs around. Who knows...maybe one day I can get another one so he can have a friend...Take Care!

Agnes
Sonoma, CA

Dear Mariah,

Hello! I just wanted to send u a quick note to say you have a wonderful website! It's great to see someone your age making a difference!

I adopted Agnes today and I would of never even met her if it were not for your site. I came to see her and Mia specifically b/c of your descriptions and pics. They had me take Agnes for a walk first ... and didn't even end up taking Mia for a walk. Agnes was so sweet, how could I pass her up!? I brought my dog Sumo with me - a beautiful golden ret/aussie mix who turned 7 last August.

Agnes had a very busy day today and is taking a nap right now (her second) with Sumo. I live about 70 miles north of the shelter, and she was great in the car! I stopped at Petco before going home and took her in with me to get her some things. She explored her new home, ate a bit then took a nap. After her nap I took her and Sumo to the park (about a block away from the house) and she went swimming with my dog ( there is a creek a long the trails). Sumo LOVES the water and to play fetch with his Frisbee; I throw it in the water and he jumps in to get it (deep enough!). I wasn't really expecting Agnes to be interested in swimming - but she jumped in! ... she doesn't seem to be interested in fetch, but I am so pleased that she enjoys the water and swimming -- thats a big part of Sumo's life and I am glad they will be able to share that!

Anyway, I just got home with them; they had a loooong walk/swim and now they are talking a nap!

Thanks so much for introducing us -- and keep up the good work!

Elizabeth

Dutchess
Eureka, CA

Dutchess is doing really well! She must have been an inside dog before, because she hasn't had any accidents at all in the house yet! She's really great with the boys. I've learned that she can't have plush toys - she rips them apart pretty quickly! LOL!

She tried to sleep in bed with us the first night, and it was pretty crowded. She only stayed a few minutes and then got down into her bed. I think she was just trying to get accustomed to unusual surroundings.

We are gradually changing her dog food, which she's handling pretty well. We haven't left her alone yet, so I am not sure how she'll handle that, but I'm not too worried. She has such a sweet personality, and is gentle - for the most part. She still has a lot of puppy in her, though, and LOVES to run in the backyard. We have a cow that lives in the pasture behind us, and the cow came up to the fence near where our older son was. Dutchess let that cow know really quickly that it was messing with the wrong boy! She's become really protective of the kids all ready.

Since her sutures are out, we can give her a bath now, right? Is there any way for us to find out what her previous owner answered to the questions on the owner surrender questionnaire? I just want to have as much information has I can for her. I know I've seen those answers posted on some other dogs on Paws to Adopt.

I'll attach a couple pictures for ya of Dutchess in her new home! Thanks for all you've done Mariah! I'll keep in touch and let you know how she's doing... :)

Update!

Dutchess has made herself at home. She's totally taken over the loveseat in this pic. She is so good natured with the boys. The baby will crawl to her if she's on the floor and pull on her legs and feet and she doesn't even flench. She's so much more than I ever could have asked for!

Just wanted to keep you updated! Hope you're doing well, and I just want to let you know again how impressed I am with the work you're doing with animals! You're saving lots of lives, and enriching lots of families!

Thanks!
Amber Broadway

Laika (aka Roxy)
Santa Rosa, CA

Hi Mariah -
We adopted Laika on April 8 - she was known as "Roxy" at the shelter. You guys did a great job of matching us up with the right dog!

I thought you might like to know how well we're doing -- we really love her, and she's livened up considerably. We like to think she's getting a good chance to enjoy what puppyhood she has left. She's definitely not the dog too scared to walk anymore! You can see some photos here:

Laika has been a challenge in some ways, but one we wouldn't have traded for anything. When we took her to the vet right after we got her, we noticed a couple of spots of hair loss; the vet did a skin scraping and we found that she had demodectic mange. We're having good luck with her treatment, and though she developed a lot of bare patches, we think we've got it under control and most of her hair is already growing back in. In retrospect, I'm glad we got her when we did -- she was probably developing it at the time and I'm guessing she would have had a harder time being adopted. But we love her like crazy and are happy to help her get through it.

On Saturday we finish a basic obedience class we've been taking her to; that's been fun, and she loves time we spend on her training (never enough, but we're working on that! She does great, it's us that need the training.) She's been great with our cats, and great with our niece and nephew. She goes to work with me in the mornings (and spends the afternoon at home), and has a big chocolate lab for a buddy there. She's eager to go to the dog park, too, and has gone from being scared of dogs to being really eager to go play with them.

When I went to find your email address on your web site, I noticed Bella, and wondered if she might be one of Laika's relatives; she looks like she has that super-shiny suede-like coat also, although Bella looks like she's a little heavier build. I think Laika has similar separation issues, but we crate her when she's alone in the house and it's working out well; I'm really lucky to be in a position to take her to work half-days with me, and eventually we hope she'll be up to full days. Anyhow, I hope Bella finds a great home also!

Cheers,
Terrie

Rafiki (aka Mo)
San Francisco, CA

Hi Mariah. I know it has been a while since we adopted Mo (now named Rafiki), but I just wanted to gave you an update on his life. He now lives in Noe Valley in San Francisco. This neighborhood is so dog friendly, perfect for Rafi! In only 3 months of having this pup in our home, he has become such a huge part of our family. I even take him to work with me! He has allready been up to Tahoe, spends lots of time in my moms back yard in Alameda, and his absolute favorite is going to Fort Funston beach, where he makes hundreds of new friends every time. Rafiki is the worlds best dog (I guess I am slightly biased:)). He is amazing with other dogs, with kids and babies, and just wants to snuggle with every human he meets. He has completed basic training at the SPCA, and is getting ready to move on to the next level. I have to tell you, he is so smart, just wants to please us. He has been so easy to train, and such a pleasure. I feel so lucky to have him! I am a proud mom, parading him down the street like a prize, as everyone wants to stop and pet him (he is THAT CUTE!). Thank you so much for all of your help in adopting Rafiki. I dont know how we lived without him for all those years! I am enclosing a pic of Rafi doing his very favorite thing, snuggling up in a sunny spot on the floor for a nap. I will send more pics, as I have thousands! Thanks again for your help, we just love him SO much, Lisa and Ivo

Kingston (aka DJ)
Chico, CA

Hey Mariah! I figured it's about time for another update. Kingston (aka DJ) is doing great! We're five weeks into our obedience class and he's learning so much! He quickly became the teacher's favorite (can you blame her?) and he's always so excited to see the other dogs. At home he's just a big love bug. I've attached a few more pictures for you. In the first one he's playing with his rope toy. You can't see it in the picture, but his butt is sticking straight up in the air. When he gets really excited he'll tuck his head under and do a somersault. It's so hilarious! Second one, just being his usual adorable self. Third, cuddling with Jordan, my brother. Fourth, [the one to the right of this text] cuddling with me. Fifth, big smiles after a nice long romp in the park. And finally, nap time after an exhausting day of playing, sniffing, running, and being oh so cute.

Needless to say, we're in love.
~Lindsay

Rudy (aka Sebastian)
Santa Rosa, CA

Hi all! Here's just a few photos of Sebastian (we now call him Rudy, at least for the moment) in his new home with us. What a joy he is! Rudy is doing very well in his adjustment here and excelling with his training. Everyone loves him and is of the opinion he's pretty adorable. He loves his walks at early morning and late afternoon and is having fun exploring his new neighborhood. We're very happy to have him in our "pack" now!

Take care, Steve and Shelia Brown

Emma in her new home!
Santa Rosa, CA

Andy
Santa Rosa, CA

A note from Andy: "Hi you guys! I just wanted to write to let you all know that I am well and loved and I am doing just great. I love my new home and my family. I have never been more spoiled. I run and play with my new mom, dad and baby sister (whom I never let out of my sight because I am her protector) all day long! I go for a run with dad every morning and spend any sunny day of the week with mom and my little girl at the park, lying in the sun or running and playing. I love fetch and I am just a perfect angel. Everyone loves me. I have a cousin, Rusty, who is my mom's sister's doggie (they live right around the corner). He is about my age and we're almost exactly the same size. We run and play in my yard all the time when they come over, which is a lot. Thank you for taking care of me and finding me the best home ever. I love you guys. Love, Andy"

Dear all at the shelter,
Andy pretty much said it all. He is the most lovable soul in the world. He is kind and gentle and even sleeps with the cat, if he's not at the foot of my 1 1/2 year old daughter's bed. He never lets her more than 2 feet away from him when we are anywhere out in public. He is so very well mannered and behaved. He listens as though he were a professionally trained show dog. Anything he didn't know when we brought him home he learned immediately there after. It boggles my mind to know that no one took him the second he got there. It all worked out for the best though, because we are so grateful to have such a kind spirit for a doggie. :) Here are some pics. Enjoy!
Sincerely, Sirena Johnson
