Learning the Layout
*Inside* To get your dog adjusted to the house, start by laying textures around the house, like a mat in front of the door, so that your dog can feel where he or she is going. You could put a mat under the food and water bowl, so that he or she can anticipate the food and water bowl coming rather than running right into it. You also can start by putting different scents in different rooms to help orient your dog with what room she or he is in. You can choose to use the scents or not, but I would definitely recommend putting textures around the house, they have been incredibly helpful for my boy, Youwho. After this, it's a good idea to show your dog around the house. Start by putting a leash on your dog and you can get on all fours and walk around the house with him or her. This way she or he won't get injuried and will get an idea of where the furniture and everything else is. You will have to do this several times and in the beginning he or she will bump into things, but soon they will have the entire house "mapped" out in their head and will get along just fine.
*Outside* Just like you did for your dog inside, you must make sure anywhere you go outside, you do the same. You need to show them around, but also guide them around obstacles and other objects while walking on a leash. You need to protect your dog from people, other dogs, poles, hydrants, EVERYTHING, while walking outside. Make sure he or she doesn't hit their head or get injuried, so you must watch pretty closely when walking your dog outside. To make your life a little easier while walking your dog outside, you can get a jacket or a bandana of some sort that says Blind and Deaf Dog, so that people know not to startle your dog and make sure to go around your dog. Also, while outside, doggles are good protectors for their eyes. |
